Public Speaking is an important life skill. From speeches to classroom presentations, speaking is a skill that we use on a regular basis. In this section, you will not only learn how to improvise, but to give efficient, engaging presentations and interesting speeches as well!

 

Love arguing? You will love debate! In Public Forum style debate, teams of two are pitted against each other. To wrap up our Public Speaking class, you will partake in a debate. You will learn how to find evidence to support, write, and defend arguments!

If you are interested in an introduction to the life sciences, this class is for you! You will get to see the world in a new light and develop an appreciation for the intricate systems and processes within all organisms, from microscopic single-celled bacteria to humans.

Introduction to Latin I taught by Tahalia Nira

Salve! Are you passionate about learning different languages? Do you want to improve your English vocabulary and do well on standardized tests? If yes, then this class is for you! Learning Latin provides the key to the Romance languages, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian. If you master Latin, you can quickly learn them as well. Not only that, nearly 80 percent of the entries in any English dictionary are borrowed, mainly from Latin. Knowing it will help you tremendously with your vocabulary and future careers.

 

In this course, we will learn how to greet in Latin, hold a basic conversation, tell dates, and count numbers. We will be studying declensions and tenses, learn new vocabulary words, and translate sentences. Along with that, we will also explore Roman history and culture.

 

This class aims to introduce the Latin language and help you feel prepared if you are willing to take it at school and further study Latin.

Love arguing? You will love debate!

 

In Public Forum style debate, teams of two are pitted against each other against a particular contention. You will learn how to form arguments, dispute claims, gather evidence, and much more! You will also learn to be logical and develop analytical arguments by pointing out logical errors in your opponents' claims. You will be fast on your feet as you learn to create speeches from just some evidence!

Lastly, everyone will partake in a debate round to wrap up the class!

In this course, we will be building a strong foundation in Pre-Algebra. We will develop mathematical skills that will help students through their entire time as Math students!

 

Our curriculum will be flexible, and will be tweaked based on the class’s needs. The goal of this highly interactive course is to help students build their skills and confidence to improve not just as Pre-Algebra students, but Math students overall!

 

The instructors recommend this course for students that have not taken Math 1/Algebra 1 in their school or with Initiative yet, as the purpose of this course is to build concepts to prepare students for that.

Chess is a complex game that has been around for thousands of years. It is quite an intellectual game, and anyone who loves critical thinking will love chess!

 

This class is a continuation of our chess class in the previous trimester. We will continue to explore the nuances of the game and continue to improve general chess skills. If you did not participate in chess class last trimester, that is totally fine! You will quickly catch up with the material.

 

At the end of the class, students will partake in a fun tournament!

This course is the next level after Introduction to Debate at Initiative Programs. Here, we will dive more deeply into the art of debate and cover more advanced topics such as the following:

 

Flowing: how to visualize the entire debate on paper/technology

 

Weighing: how to compare impacts to tell the judge why your arguments are more important

 

Meta-Weighing: Why your weighing mechanism should be preferred over your opponents

 

Narrative: telling a story throughout the debate round!

 

And of course, we will do more debates and prepare for more interesting topics!

Introduction to Java

Introduction to Java :

The world of programming is vast and complex, as it can be hard to find the right course for you. Fortunately, as an overview of the material covered in AP Computer Science, Introduction to Java will give you all the basic principles you need to understand to succeed in the world of programming. Java is one of the core languages of computer science, and setting the right foundation when learning programming is key.

 

This class aims to streamline newfound interest in computers and programming into a class that can easily be built upon. You don't need any past coding experience to take the course, and some of the concepts we will discuss and apply range from basics like loops to more difficult ones such as polymorphism.

 

For the final project, students will have the freedom to create anything they want using the principles taught in class.
